Our life is shaped by numbers from the moment we come into this world. It happens on precise date and time; our physical dimensions are measured at our very first breath; even our initial identity is encapsulated in a sequence of digits on our birth certificate. Our homes have addresses, inconceivable without numbers; our phones, in essence, are nothing more than unique numerical codes. As if destined to be our loyal companions, numbers follow us everywhere, and with time our bond with them becomes inextricable.

The fact that numbers influence our life and fortune has long been proven. This is neither magic nor sorcery, but a scientific principle, and its basics were laid down by Pythagoras, one of the greatest sages of ancient world. For centuries people treated numbers as valuable allies and resorted to them for guidance and counsel. They were even thought to influence destiny – a belief echoed in Hebrew, where each letter had a numerical value, and change of a name meant change of fate.

Numbers and their combinations have always been a universal language, crossing cultural boundaries and serving us in various fields. Programming offers a potent example, but if that isn't persuasive enough, consider any scientific field – you’ll see it crystal clear. Drunvalo Melchizedek (Bernardo Perona), famous metaphysician, esoteric scientist and a revered spiritual teacher and author, explores this profound concept in his book The Ancient Secret of the Flower of Life[1], where he reveals that everything in the Universe adheres to specific laws and is meticulously arranged in a same harmonious pattern. He also contemplates the mysterious flower of life – a motif found in ancient temple designs, in the structure of crystals and snowflakes, in the atom of carbon, and even within the human embryo at its nascent stages. This intricate pattern, pervasive in nature, is all about proportions – and, consequently, numbers.

The core of Pythagoras' ancient postulates, which form the foundation of classical numerology, can be succinctly expressed as follows: firstly, nature follows geometric principles; secondly, divine law is precise, specific, calculable and can be accurately expressed – as any mathematical or physical equation[2]. At the same time, numerology is not merely a study of numbers, but an exploration of human existence: our life, ideas, values, talents and flaws.

Over and over again I hear the question: “Why do you believe in this? Who told you that everything is like this?” I found the answer long ago; and now, when I witness another confirmation of the regularity, I just marvel at the harmony in the world, like any of us should. Numerology is often dismissed as a pseudoscience lacking scientific foundation or reliable evidence. However, nature has already provided us with all the proof we need. How else, for example, can we explain the alignment of ideal proportions – found in architectural marvels, in the dimensions of Noah's Ark, in the arrangement of leaves on plant stems, in the musical, literary and artistic masterpieces – to one and the same number, which we can approximately write down as 1,618?

This number, represented by the Greek letter phi (Φ), is called the golden ratio, or the golden section – harmonious proportion where two quantities mirror the relationship between their total and the larger part. In geometry, art and architecture this beautiful principle, hailed as formula of divine harmony by scientists and artists alike, became the cornerstone of aesthetically pleasing compositions. This enigmatic ratio is also known as Fibonacci proportion, named after the renowned Italian mathematician. Endless hours of studies allowed him to get his famous sequence, where each number is the sum of the two preceding ones – and from which phi can be derived.

How can we discuss the accidental nature of something when it appears as a pattern in every aspect of our world? Is it truly just a coincidence? Recent findings in microbiology provide compelling reasons to think otherwise. Even the DNA embodies the golden ratio: each complete spiral of the double helix measures 34 angstroms long and 21 angstroms wide. These numbers are present in the Fibonacci series, and their ratio very closely approximates phi. Also, it's worth mentioning a theory that intervals between certain bonds in the DNA helix repeat in a pattern of 10, 5, 6, and 5 units, and these numbers, converted into Hebrew letters based on their numerical values, give us the word YHVH – the sacred name of God.

Leonardo da Vinci, a brilliant inventor and a visionary, centuries ahead of his time, spent decades studying patterns, proportions, and geometric forms. His renowned drawing of the "perfect man" vividly captures his profound understanding of these concepts. “We have these geometrical forms that appear to be outside the body as well as inside it,”[3] writes Melchizedek, and a little later he adds: “The human body is divided in the phi ratios from top to bottom”[4]. And this is not the only case. The same proportion is found in our entire body: between the length of the forearm and the length of the palm, the length of the shin and the length of the foot – all over the skeleton, usually in the joints.

The same ratio can be seen in absolutely any living organism, from a butterfly to a frog.

Thus, Fibonacci proportions are woven into the fabric of the cosmos – consider the dimensions of the Earth and Moon. Also, they are evident in architectural wonders, like the ancient Egyptian pyramids. We observe these patterns in our bodies, in delicate wings of butterflies, in intricate beauty of flowers. Speaking of flowers, Melchizedek mentions a unique arrangement in the number of their petals – a discovery made by Fibonacci during his research.

“Flower petals and leaf and seed patterns correspond to definite numbers <…>. He [Fibonacci] noticed that lilies and irises have 3 petals, and that buttercups, larkspurs and columbine – 5 petals. Some delphiniums have 8 petals, corn marigolds have 13, and some asters – 21 petals. Daisies almost always have 34, 55 or 89 petals. He began to see these same numbers over and over again throughout nature”[5].

Can We See into the Future? Three Myths About Numerology

Myth 1. Numerology belongs to the realm of fairytales.

There is nothing magical about numerology, and numbers have nothing to do with any kind of witchcraft – they simply hold information, like a barcode. The only difference is that we encode the latter, while our own “data pool” is imprinted by the Universe from our birth and becomes manifest at a specific moment in our life. It can be studied and analyzed, without fabricating anything.

Myth 2. Fate cannot be escaped.

This myth implies that if you had a prophesy that you will be a loser, or a beggar, or unmarried, it will be so forever and nothing can be changed. No! There is always a multi-variant outcome. You always have a choice. Numerology can tell about your destiny and personal qualities, it outlines a common path, but life is full of events that can change its course. A knife is made to cut, but it is not the only way to use it. What can we say about a human, endowed with the freedom of will!

Myth 3. All forecasts are set in stone.

Upon calculating their Destiny Number, many become alarmed, when they find their interpretations unappealing, or unfavorable, or unsuitable, or unrealistic in any imaginable sense. Sometimes, couples attempt to predict a lucky wedding date and choose a day on the basis of their forecast – only to find that they have made a mistake. That is why I strongly support a holistic approach to evaluating someone’s potential and abilities, and I always recommend studying a complete numerological chart instead of simple fragment of a puzzle. Classical Pythagorean numerology focuses on ten numbers – from 0 to 9. All two-digit numbers obtained during calculations must be reduced to them by summing the digits. However, there are three exceptions: 11, 22 and 33. They will step into the spotlight in due time, but for now let's meet the main heroes.

Each of these ten numbers carries its own unique energy, a fact acknowledged by every numerological school. In Kabbalistic numerology, numbers symbolize fundamental principles – the basic elements upon which the Universe is constructed. In Vedic numerology, each number correlates with a specific planet. When examining the classical Pythagorean matrix, we observe the close relationship between these descriptions and the intrinsic properties of numbers and their correlation with the matrix's sectors. For instance, in the Kabbalistic interpretation, the number One, representing the Sun, signifies essence or prime cause. In the matrix, the first sector is associated with character – in other words, the essence and light that each of us brings into the world. While different combinations may reveal various individual qualities, the core meanings and energies of numbers remain consistent. That is why I will start by describing each number one by one.

0 – The number Zero

Zero holds a unique place in the matrix, though it might not be immediately apparent. This number is crucial, especially considering its connection to infinity. Zero's essence lies in its dual nature: it embodies infinite knowledge and boundless potential, serving as a gateway to the mysteries of existence. Yet, it also represents emptiness, loneliness, and restlessness. Zero signifies absence – the absence of resistance, the embrace of truth (as an absence of lies), and life free from troubles, rivals, or adversity. However, it can also signify spiritual void, egoism, and immersion in worldly matters. In Tibetan numerology, zero symbolizes a tree or its roots. We will delve deeper into its hidden sense when discussing additional numbers.

1 – The number One

The number One is a symbol of leaders and pioneers, embodying strength, power, persistence, and confidence. It represents individuality and a desire to be at the forefront. Among elements, it aligns with Water, and among celestial bodies, it correlates with the Sun. This number signifies a strong inclination to take charge and lead. However, like any powerful force, and like any other number, it has its shadow side: its dark part manifests itself in arrogance and despotism, imperiousness and aggression, the desire to trample others for your own benefit. Like a great wave, the number One can sweep away everything in its path. Taming this powerful energy and directing it towards positive outcomes for oneself and society can be a challenging endeavor, but it is definitely worth the candle.

2 – The number Two

The number Two represents energy, but not so much a pure driving force like One. It acts as an embodiment of interaction and communication, potential that seeks to be revealed. Its element is Metal, which can be soft and pliant, yet sometimes happens to be rigid, unyielding and «aloof». Among the celestial bodies, it is associated with the Moon. The number Two – excuse the tautology – is an expression of duality. Its negative side reveals itself in excessive gentleness, weak will, timidity and a penchant for flattery.

3 – The number Three

In Kabbalistic numerology the number Three is a representation of trinity of life, substance and mind[6] – strength, matter and consciousness. Its ruling planet is Jupiter. This number is associated with luck, but in fact, it is a symbol of progress and enlightenment. Looking ahead, its presence plays a special role in the psychomatrix, being interpreted as an interest for science, technology and invention. In fact, it shows not only the enthusiasm for scientific pursuits, but also the desire for knowledge in any field, which drives us to explore and comprehend the world around.

4 – The number Four

The number Four is intimately linked to the material, physical and tangible aspects. It oversees health, the body, procreation, and the energy of the external. Besides, it carries the energy of physical endurance and attractiveness, as well as the urge to organize everything and bring order to chaos. The number Four is also a symbol of intelligence, guiding us through the laws of the material world. It has the power to transform ideas and plans into something real and practical. Its element is Fire, and in the astrological realm similar concepts are closely associated with Uranus.

5 – The number Five

The number Five embodies patterns, changes and independence. It is responsible for the interconnection of everything on our planet, for cyclicality, for “feeling” the laws of nature; that's why it manifests itself in both logic and intuition. Its element is Earth, its ruling planet is Mercury. Alexander Alexandrov, author of The Big Book of Numerology, notes: “Four seasons and the soil that gives new life – that is this number’s link with its primary element”[7]. This number is associated with planning, foresight, integrating disparate elements into a cohesive system, and building logical chains for the goal of utmost importance – the survival.

6 – The number Six

The number Six is a symbol of Venus, of beauty, harmony, truth, kindness. Its task is to bring good to everyone. “The «humanitarian» establishes the place of the number Six in all human and spiritual affairs”[8], writes Juno Jordan. This is evident in professions dedicated to the welfare of society, as well as in striving to take responsibility for caring about others, sometimes to an extreme. This number embodies qualities similar to the element of Water – renewal, invigoration, and most importantly, quenching everyone's thirst in times of need.

7 – The number Seven

The number Seven is the one fully expressing the idea of perfection and completion. Seven days of the week, seven seals, seven notes, seven colors of the rainbow – this number embodies the essence of closure and wholeness. It is associated with analysis, comprehension and reaping the fruits of the long way and hard labor, encapsulated by the sum of 6 and 1. It clearly points to the truth and to the ability to see the big picture. This number is the vessel of all life experience, which is why it is so intertwined with luck. But still, it reminds us that luck is not an immediate gift but a reward for effort. Its symbol is Fire, the ruling planet is Neptune.
