Bei den Römern war die Frage nach den Quellen des Nils – «caput Nili quaerere» – sprichwörtlich ein unmöglich zu bewältigendes Unterfangen. Ein Mann, der von der tatsächlichen Lösung des Problems umgetrieben wurde, war der schottische Adelige, Exzentriker und Privatgelehrte James Bruce. Vom Roten Meer bis nach Äthiopien, vorbei an den politischen Wirren und Kriegsgebieten Afrikas und den Herrschaftsbereichen raffgieriger Regenten führte Bruce seine Expedition am 4. November 1770 erfolgreich zu den Quellen des Blauen Nils. Heute sorgt die Diskussion um die «wahre» Erstentdeckung der Nilquellen in der Forschung für Uneinigkeit, denn bis ins 17. Jahrhundert hinein werden potentielle Vorläufer angegeben. Dennoch war James Bruce der Erste, der bei seinem Erkundungsvorhaben systematisch mit den Mitteln der modernen Wissenschaft vorging und so die Epoche der europäischen Erforschung Afrikas wesentlich mitbegründete.
