English Abstract

Institutional Memory and Regional Identity: The Phenomenon of Family Curatorship in Museum Practice (A Case Study of the Shilovsky Historical and Cultural Complex)

This monograph examines the phenomenon of long-term family curatorship in regional museum practice through the case of the Shilovsky Historical and Cultural Complex in the Ryazan region of Russia [10]. Founded in 1974 as a local history circle at the Palace of Pioneers, the museum has evolved over nearly five decades into a multi-profile municipal cultural institution with international academic recognition, developed successively by two representatives of the same family founder A.N. Gavrilov (b. 1955) and his nephew A.P. Gavrilov (b. 1976), who served as director from 1994 to 2017 [9, 10, 30].

The theoretical framework integrates three complementary approaches: P. Noras concept of lieux de mmoire (sites of memory) [4, 5]; J. Assmanns theory of cultural memory [1], distinguishing between communicative memory (living oral tradition within three to four generations) and cultural memory (fixed, institutionalized, transmitted through material carriers and ritualized forms); and P. Bourdieus institutional analysis [2, 3], particularly his concepts of symbolic capital and habitus.

The study introduces the concept of family curatorship as a distinct institutional model within a municipal museum framework, characterized by long-term continuity, accumulation of tacit knowledge, personal motivation, and flexibility. It analyses the ethnological approach in archaeology developed by the museums founders a research strategy interpreting archaeological artifacts through the lens of ethnographic data, folklore traditions, and oral history collected in the same region. This approach is compared with Western ethnoarchaeology [68] and the Russian tradition of ethnographic parallels. Recent interdisciplinary studies of the Ryazan-Oka burial ground culture, integrating archaeology, paleogenetics, toponymy, and GIS methods [Babenberg, 2026], corroborate the scientific relevance of regional museum initiatives.

A significant focus is placed on the museums integration of modern scientific methods: airborne laser scanning (LiDAR) for landscape archaeology [33], genetic analysis (ancient DNA) of populations from the Ryazan-Oka burial grounds [25, 26], 3D facial reconstructions based on skulls [26, 27], and non-invasive exploration of archaeological sites. These technologies, implemented in collaboration with academic institutions [28, 31], position the museum as a research centre rather than a mere repository.

The monograph examines the Meshcherskie Skazy (Meshchera Tales) cycle [1114] as a unique document of the transition from communicative to cultural memory, subjecting it to critical source analysis. A comparative analysis with other regional museums including European provincial museums such as RAMS (Belgium) [38, 39, 40], the Gallo-Roman Museum in Tongeren (Belgium) [37], Museum Obersch?nenfeld (Germany) [38], the Museum of Liverpool (UK) [34], the Wiltshire Museum (UK) [35], and the Rijksmuseum van Oudheden (Netherlands) [36] identifies the conditions for the reproducibility of the family curatorship model.

The research contributes to museology, cultural anthropology, and the theory of cultural memory, offering a conceptualization of family curatorship as a factor of institutional continuity in the post-Soviet transformation of museum practice.

Keywords: museum studies, regional identity, cultural memory, ethnological approach in archaeology, popular ethnology, family curatorship, institutional continuity, Shilovsky Museum, Meshchera Tales, LiDAR, ancient DNA, 3D reconstruction, European provincial museums.
