Afew words from the author

This book consists of33dialogues presented inRussian, inBritish English and inAmerican English and ofwords totranslate the Russian options into English. Primarily there were only texts inRussian and words for translation inthe book, that was it, but Iunderstood inthat shape and size the book was not very popular, so Idecided toadd atranslation into English for each dialogue. So Itranslated all the 33texts into English. That seemed like abit better. But Iremembered there were alot ofbooks and manuals and textbooks made on that scheme already. It would be better tochange the structure alittle bit, Ithought. So Idecided togive each dialogue inthree variants: InRussian, inEnglish, and inAmerican English. Im not sure whether its the first time or not the first time that British and American branches are represented inone book but Ididnt have achance so far tocome across that kind ofbook, anyway. Toimplement that idea, Isent my translations toafriend ofmine, ayoung Brit Vanessa Heathcock and asked her toconvert the texts into British English and then Isent the same translations tomy American friends, Stephen Mountman and Barbara Tylor, and asked them toconvert the texts into American English and they all did that and Iappreciate their help very much.

Reading anew version ofthe book is acaptivating pastime, because though on the one hand the Brits and Americans speak the same language, on the other they do it quite differently.

So here is the new enhanced version ofthe book, and Ill be very grateful toyou all, my dear readers, if you send me at least acouple ofwords ofyour opinion about it to: bookman10@yandex.ru (mailto:bookman10@yandex.ru)

Bye for now and write back soon.

There is awater park there as well, but then you have togo through adifferent entrance.

The other one over there along that street is ahundred feet long, and its always crowded. It is mainly teenagers there but its much cheaper though. There is awater park there as well, but through separate entrance.

Im Peter. What can Igetyou?

Do you have any kind offish?

Sure, we do. Did you ask Any kind offish? Its probably simpler tosay what kind offish we dont have here.

Ah, Isee, do you havecod?

Ofcourse. You didnt even have toask.

You know, afriend ofmine from San Antonio once treated me with some fried cod. He would take alarge fish, cut it along the spine intwo and fried those big pieces which were about twenty centimeters long. Do you think you could cook the cod thatway?

Certainly, no problem. We can cook cod that way. What kind ofgarnish would you like with it,sir?

Hmm, Im not sure. French fries maybe? How your cook decides it would be nice.

What about first course?

For the first course Idont know either. What have yougot?

Weve got very good fish solyanka with sturgeon and salmon.

Ah, sounds good, Ill go for that one, yes!

Asalad?

Do you have Greek salad?

Certainly.

May Ialso have some Armenian brandy, fifty grams?

OK, for dessert?

Iwould really fancy asponge-cake.

Isee. What kind ofcake? Napoleon or abrownie? Or acream puff?

No, no. Iwould prefer asummer pudding with strawberry or cranberry. Youve got summer pudding, haventyou?

Yes.

And Iwould like abig cup ofblack tea with lemon.

Any fruit?

Lets make it one big dark red colored apple. Arent they called Chinese or something like that? Oh yes, and four tangerines, please.

Anything else?

No, Ithink that will be enough, thanks.

Ill bring you the fruit and the salad now, but the other dishes will be ready abit later.

Thankyou!

Im Peter. So, what can Iget foryou?

Might you happen tohave any fish, per chance?

Did you say any kind offish? Why, ofcourse we do! It would probably be simpler tosay what kind offish we dont have here.

Evencod?

You must be joking! Why, ofcourse we have cod! That goes without saying!

You know, afriend ofmine from San Antonio treated me tosome fried cod not too long ago. He would often take alarge fish, cut it along the spine into two 20cm or so pieces each and then fry them. It was, so tospeak, cod side, for lack ofabetter word. Could you, perhaps, prepare it thatway?

Certainly! That would be no problem at all! We also prepare cod that way as well. Which garnish would you like toaccompany your cod and for your side dish as well, sir?

Idont know.hmmm.. Isuppose that any old garnish will do but for aside, Ithink that maybe French fries will suffice. Better yet, Ill tell you what! Why dont you surprise me and let your cook decide for us both instead.

And for the first course,sir?

For the first course well, Idont know. Isuppose that Istill need more time toconsiderit.

Well, Ican say that we just so happen tohave very good solyanka with sturgeon and salmon.

Yes! That sounds absolutely splendid! Ithink that Iwill have that then!

Asalad?

Do you, bychance, have Greek salad?

Ofcourse! It happens tobe one ofour most sought after salads that we offer! Anything todrink?

Armenian brandy, fifty grams.

And, lastly, for dessert?

Your fanciest cake! Imean, asponge-cake.

Iunderstand. That is kind ofanapoleon, is it not? Or perhaps abrownie or acream puff, even?

Im afraid not,sir.

As ofnow, we only offer summer pudding with strawberry or cranberry.

Do you have summer pudding available toorder?

No question.

Great! And alarge black tea with lemon, preferably inamug.

Would you like any fruit inaddition tothat?

Alarge red apple, please. If Im not mistaken, Ibelieve that its called Chinese apple.

OK, very well, sir! Will that beall?

And four tangerines, please.

Does that complete your order?

Notyet!

Theres more?! Very well, sir. Tell me what else you would like whenever youre ready! Better yet, Ill bring you your fruit and salad while youre deciding on what else you would like and Ican serve you the rest abit later, if that works foryou.

Good morning. Can we rent acar?

Sure. No problem. Were glad tohelp you. Which brand would you want and where are you heading?

ToSan Francisco. There are four ofus: my wife, two kids and me. We would like something really comfortable.

San Francisco From New York its about 3000miles. Iwould recommend you Chevy Cruise. The model is designed specially for long-distance trips. AC, smooth running, cruise control, sunroof, low level ofnoise, very good specifications. The back seat converts into two berths. Avery capacious trunk. This car is very reliable.

Chevy Cruise Can Ihave alook atit?

Oh yes, this is it. Please, get inbehind the wheel.

Well, its very comfortable. Plenty ofroom. May Istart the engine?

Ofcourse.

Practically Idont hear the engine working. Fantastic! What is the power ofthe engine?

This car has 115horse power internal combustion engine. That car over there inthe corner has 120horse-power diesel.

Idont like diesel, runs like atractor. What is the fuel rate ofthiscar?

1.8gallon on highway and 2.5intown.

Now the main thing. What is the price for all this?

Forty dollars aday, mileage included.

Does that mean, that even if my mileage is over 1000miles it will still all cost forty bucks aday?

Quite right,sir.

Then, lets accomplish.

Are we formalizing thiscar?

Yes, this one. Is the insurance included or it goes separately?

Included. Will you please sign the document?

So quickly? Great! And One more question. We are planning tocome back byplane. Where can we surrender the car back inSan Francisco?

362Douglass Drive. The list ofour branch offices is on page 3ofthe agreement.

Thanks.

Have agood trip!

Hello. Wed like torent acar.

Hello. Sure, thats no problem. Lets see if we might have something that youd be interested in. What did you guys have inmind?

My family and Iare planning on taking aroad trip toSan Francisco. Therell be four ofus inall and wed like tohave something really spacious.

Its roughly something like 3,000miles or so from San Francisco toNew York. AChevy Cruise might be what youre looking for since its specifically designed for long-distance trips and has all ofthe amenities that drivers ask for like AC, cruise control, sunroof, power windows, reclinable seats, is great on gas, and is pretty much loaded right from the factory. The back seat folds down into two separate sleeping compartments. The trunk is spacious and its avery reliable car, overall.
